The industrial working group “ToolS” at the PTW of the TU Darmstadt focuses on the operational stability of milling tools with indexable inserts and the stability of long overhanging milling tools.

Objective

Since 1991, the PTW has been working on the topic of tool safety in a large number of projects and in close cooperation with industry. In particular, the VDMA Association for Precision Tools and its members work and research together with PTW in a joint research project, the ToolS industry working group. Over the past four years, the AK ToolS I und II working group has gained numerous insights into the safe use of fast-turning tools and chucks as well as the prediction of the process stability of long overhanging tools. PTW has carried out extensive work to determine the limits of use (e.g. centrifugal strength and bending-critical natural frequencies) of milling tools with indexable inserts and overhanging shank tools and chucks.
