Powertrain Machining

The industrial working group “Powertrain” at the PTW of the TU Darmstadt focuses on productivity increases in the metal-cutting production of powertrain components.

Optimisation of tools and cooling lubrication strategies as well as the development and analysis of new manufacturing concepts are the goals of the working group.

Objective

The constantly growing demands on the materials used in the powertrain of vehicles are accompanied by increasing challenges with regard to the economic efficiency of the production processes.Whether it is the processing of high-temperature steels for the housings of exhaust gas turbochargers or the drilling of deep holes in cylinder heads made of aluminium alloys – in order to guarantee economic production, exact coordination between tool, machine and production strategy is always necessary. With the aim of increasing productivity, process reliability and quality in the production of powertrain components, the powertrain working group was formed under the leadership of the PTW of the TU Darmstadt together with numerous industrial partners. In order to optimise economic production, performance-enhancing approaches to various process actuating variables, such as the process parameters, the process boundary conditions and the tools, are being explored.
