Machine Tools and Automation

The tutorial “Machine Tools and Automation” is for students of mechanical engineering and industrial engineering in the Master's program with an interest in machine tool drives and PLC programming. The tutorial covers the modeling and simulation of the feed drive of a machine tool and its validation as well as the design of electropneumatic circuits and PLC programming.

Content

Aims The goal of the tutorial “Machine Tools and Automation” is to deepen the theory and practical application of the axis control of machine tools and PLC programming. The first part of the tutorial focuses on the investigation of the dynamic behavior of the feed drives of a machine tool in theory and practice. In particular, the influence of the controller parameterization of the axes will be examined. The second part deals with the design of electro-pneumatic control systems and the implementation of a programmable logic controller (PLC) using the example of the mechatronic training system mMS 4.0.
Contents Part 1: PLC programming
  • Conception and realization of electro-pneumatic control systems
  • Realization of a complete mechatronic system consisting of a Bosch Rexroth assembly line and sorting robot with a programmable logic controller (PLC)
Part 2: Axis control on a machine tool
  • Modeling the feed drives of a machine tool (WZM)
  • Design and simulation of axis control with MATLAB
  • Metrological investigation and verification on the HELLER Profitrainer with regard to positioning accuracy and vibration behavior
Previous knowledge / training Previous knowledge and experience from the lecture “Machine Tools and Robots” is advantageous, but not necessary. A kick-off will take place before the tutorial begins, so that there is sufficient time to familiarize yourself with the topic.
Skript, Tutorials All documents will be provided at the kick-off meeting. A PDF script with tasks is available for both of the tutorials.
