Machining technology

Machining technology is facing increasing demands in the years to come. Besides focussing on economic process designs with regards to high material removals rates and overall productivity, machining technology needs to consider ecological topics like energy efficiency and resource conservation. Increasing digitalization of production processes requires development of smart and interconnected cutting tools that provide process information through sensor technology. Furthermore, high-performance materials with increased strength and impaired machinability increase the pressure to innovate. Due to these increased requirements it is necessary to re-evaluate cutting tools, machine tools, process parameters and process strategies and to optimize or even to replace them, in order to meet the industry’s demands concerning quality and quantity. Among other things, the research group machining technology is using additive manufacturing technologies to develop and implement innovative tool concepts.

The research group machining technology accepts these challenges. Its focus is on machining processes with defined cutting edges.
