Machine Tools and Components
Modern machine tools are complex mechatronicy systems. In addition to classical mechanical issues like static and dynamic stiffness, electrical and information technology research topics are becoming more important.
Sensors whirch are already present in a large number of components in the machine are used for permanent recording of the machine’s status. Combining several machines and condition monitoring serve as basis for further research topics such as predictive maintenance.
The research group “Machine tools and components” looks at the machine as a complete system as well as at individual machine components. Current research questions are, e.g. the energy efficiency of the motor spindle, the development of sensoric tools and tool holders, the new design of structural components made of alternative materials (e.g. CFRP or GRP) as well as machining with industrial robots. Both simulation tools and demonstrators are utilized, demonstrating the PTW's extensive measuring technology.
